South Yorkshire Transport | News // Rail line reopens after £20m upgrade

The railway line between Cleethorpes and Doncaster has reopened after undergoing a £20m improvement project. This has caused numerous disruptions and delays all summer, with replacement buses for the affected Northern Rail service between Scunthorpe and Doncaster running between Hatfield & Stainforth and for the Transpennie Service, running between Scunthorpe and Doncaster. Replacement buses had been put on for passengers over the past 11 weeks while work was carried out to help speed up the service.

Richard Lungmuss, of Network Rail, said the investment had resulted in a more "robust" train line. The work focused on the Medge Hall area, where trains had been limited to travelling at 10mph.

David Mallender, from passenger train operator First TransPennine Express, said: "Having this problem fixed means that our trains can run more smoothly, punctually and reliably, benefiting our passengers in the long-term."

Now that these works are now over, a Class 185 train has been diverted from the Transpennie South route to the Transpennine North route, with a Class 170 coming in it's place. Also all onboard trolley services will be limited to Manchester Piccadilly to Doncaster only. There will be no service on the Transpennine Express Southern route between Manchester Airport and Manchester Piccadilly and Doncaster and Cleethorpes, due to a lack of demand for such a service.
