On Thursday 20th August, U2 will be performing for over 50,000 people at the Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield. As a result of this, there will be major disruption to the transport network in and around the Lower Don Valley from around 1pm until around 7pm. Doors open for the concert at 5pm. Extra trams and buses will be put on to cater for the increased demand and concert goers are been urged by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive to get to the gig by public transport. Park & Ride sites at Middlewood, Meadowhall, Halfway and Nunnery Square will also be open later, to cater for the increased demand due to this concert. People travelling to and from Sheffield from the M1 and Rotherham are been urged to consider using public transport on Thursday 20th August or use alternative routes such as the Sheffield Parkway, to avoid the Attercliffe and Tinsley areas, during this time. The Arena / Don Valley Stadium tram station will be closed from around 10:30pm until 11pm, to help assist with the dispersal of the crowds from the concert on the grounds of safety reasons. During this time, Attercliffe Common will also be closed, to allow people to depart the area quickly. This means that service 69 (Sheffield to Rotherham) will be diverted via Brightside Lane and as a result, will not be able to serve Attercliffe Road or parts of Attercliffe Common (between Staniforth Road and Hawke Street). Traffic from the north will be accessing the site via Brightside Lane via the Meadowhall roundabout at Junction 34 North and traffic from the south will be accessing the site either via Sheffield Road via the Tinsley roundabout at Junction 34 South or via the Sheffield Parkway, Europa Link, Shepcote Lane and Broughton Lane via Junction 33. Stagecoach Yorkshire have also teamed up with Sheffield International Venues to create a new Park & Ride service between a car park by Europa Link (the former Sheffield City Airport) in Tinsley Park (on the Rotherham/Sheffield border) and the Don Valley Stadium, with services (depending upon demand) operating up to every 4 minutes between 1pm and 8:30pm, when U2 go on stage. This service will cost £10 to park your car safely and securely and £2 per person for a return service to the Don Valley Stadium. U2’s 360º tour at the Don Valley Stadium is set to attract 52,000 people and will be the biggest concert in Yorkshire since 2000! Extra transport assistants will be available at both Sheffield City Centre and Meadowhall Interchange to help assist concert goers on the best way to get to the concert. Public Transport services which will most likely be affected due to this concert are as follows,
There may also be disruptions to other local transport services in Sheffield and Rotherham due to this concert during these times. This is a result of staff issues (such as if a driver is late on the 69 from Sheffield, then the 7 to Blackburn could also be late, due to these services interworking at Rotherham Interchange). You can also stay ahead of the concert, by keeping an eye on our Jam Cams across Sheffield and Rotherham, which give you access to over 80 traffic CCTV cameras around the South Yorkshire area.
